Fleur and Martin were very happy with the birth announcement I made for their daughter Lotte. Therefore, they wanted me to make a matching one for their son. The colour needed to change, and could I come up with another cute animal? I recently designed a penguin mascot. Would they like a baby card with a penguin?
There he is, fresh from the egg! The penguin’s style is based on that of the elephant on Lotte’s card. On the inside of the card, the entire family is welcome the little penguin.
Character design
The fun thing of character design is making variations. I loved editing ‘simple’ penguin Pepijn into a penguin Fleur, penguin Martin, and penguin Lotte.
Cool detail: the parents’ phone numbers aren’t labelled with their names, but with custom icons I made. Anyone who know Martin and Fleur only a bit, knows what those icons represent.
Black = stylish
Black is the card’s main colour, just like with Lotte’s. It may appear dour, but it mainly has an elegant and stylish effect. The black also leaves the most room for the bright blue shapes to shine.
A nice detail we added are the little, glimmering stars all over. Those were printed on the matte black card with a glistening, transparent varnish ink. This creates a very cool effect when you tilt the card under light.
