‘It should have a toy train, we met in a train!’
‘Yes, and you were reading a book I commented on. Can we put a book in?’
‘We love D&D and board games, could you add a meeple and an eight-sided die?’
‘Then we should also add a toy racing car, we are both fans of F1!’
‘And a Star Wars reference!’
‘We have a mural in the baby room, could you put that in?’
‘And out cats!!’
There was no shortage of ideas when Arno and Marleen started brainstorming about what should be on their daughter’s baby card. The problem was more to have it all fit in it.
Small details make a design personal
Because I knew where all details originated, this was an amazing job. The tiny references make the card very personal and somewhat private. Some people seeing the card immediately recognised the cats, others picked out the mural. Not everyone understood the weird die, I’m afraid.
I was not able to fit in all ideas that Marleen and Arno brainstormed, but there are a lot! Pay some attention to the backside: that little man over there is going to pop up again. Or least, someone in his style.
