Let’s not beat around the bush: Janneke and Nathan are gaming geeks, just like me. Board games. Card games. Video games. Dungeons & Dragons, even. It was therefore not surprising that they asked me to do a fantasy-style baby card for their son. They also had a plushie of a dragon that they’d love to see in the design.
So I started sketching characters. A wee wizard, a little rogue, a cute elf, and a smiling little knight. Those sketches weren’t bigger than a square inch, but Nathan and Janneke were completely in love with the knight. It had to be the knight. No, you don’t have to try the sorcerer or the archer, it’s going to be the knight!
What’s in a name
The brave and cheerful knight just made a fire in the forest, to spend the night next to a little stream. His dragon companion is on guard.
It was only later, when I heard the boy’s name, that I understood the love for the knight sketch. Arthur! Without knowing, I had made a reference to the Round Table character. Fitting, to say the least.
Similar to some baby card I made earlier, we used a zig-zag fold. The actual card is tall and narrow, but it folds to a perfect square. The less important text is hidden by the fold. And of course the illustration is continuous regardless of whether the card is opened or closed.
Want your own fantasy-style baby card?
As you can see: gaming nerds and geeks are more than welcome! And even if you don’t roll twenty-sided dice, tell me what you’d like for a baby card. I’d love to help you.
